BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
SURESH – Geneses
Society for Urban, Rural, Economic and Socio Habitation (SURESH) was established on 17 December 1994 under the Societies Registration Act. The organization emerged from the struggles of marginalized communities who experienced social exclusion, exploitation and discrimination. SURESH was formed to organize these communities, build their capacities and help them overcome barriers to social, economic and cultural development.
The organization follows a non-violent, democratic and participatory approach, ensuring that development is driven from the grassroots with active involvement of the communities themselves.
SURESH works with a rights-based perspective, empowering marginalized groups, especially women and other vulnerable sections to become agents of change. It promotes social harmony by challenging discrimination, fostering inclusion and supporting collective action to claim human and constitutional rights.
Economic initiatives undertaken by SURESH aim to reduce dependency strengthen community leadership and enhance self-reliance. The organization complies with all statutory requirements and emphasizes transparency, accountability and community-led sustainable development in all its programs.
Target Area
SURESH operates in remote, backward, neglected, drought-prone, frequently disaster-affected coastal districts and regions inhabited by primitive tribal communities of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Tamilnadu States in India.
These areas face severe challenges, including poor connectivity, limited local resources, inadequate infrastructure and recurring natural hazards such as cyclones, floods, and droughts. The districts often experience high poverty, low literacy, poor health and nutrition indicators and limited access to basic services.
These target regions are also marked by significant social vulnerabilities, including systemic exclusion, caste- and community-based discrimination, child labor, early marriages and human trafficking. The combination of geographical, environmental and social disadvantages makes these communities among the most marginalized in the state, highlighting the need for focused attention in any development planning or analysis.
Target People
SURESH focuses on women and girls, including single women, children and adolescents, persons with disabilities and individuals experiencing homelessness with special emphasis on marginalized and tribal communities such as Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. The organization also works with small and marginal farmers, landless labourers, rural poor households and the elderly, promoting social inclusion, livelihood security and rights-based, sustainable development
